In a world where technology and innovation are rapidly advancing, how do we ensure that our homes remain truly human in 2025? Architect and interior designer Alex Bayusaputro, founder of Genius Loci, shares his vision of housing design where cutting-edge technology and intuitive human needs intersect. As AI begins to shape the future of residential architecture, Alex explores how designers can create homes that balance smart functionality, sustainability, and emotional depth designs that are not only innovative but also deeply connected to the people who inhabit them.

This exclusive interview was conducted by Synergy Indonesia Magazine, diving into Alex’s perspective on the evolving role of AI in residential design and how it can harmonize with timeless human values.

I personally will return to the basic purpose of a house to provide shading, protection, safety, and comfort from both the weather and the surrounding environment. While modern innovations and aesthetics are important, a truly relevant home in 2025 must still fulfill these fundamental human needs. From thermal comfort and ventilation to privacy and shelter, these core functions should shape the foundation of any design before anything else is added.

How is the principle of balance between function, aesthetics, and comfort applied in contemporary housing design?

This balance is definitely needed and can be achieved through a human-centered design approach. Function comes first how the space will be used—then it’s refined with aesthetics without compromising comfort. Using natural materials, sustainable choices, and thoughtful lighting creates harmony between all elements.

Do you think modern home design is still able to touch the emotional side of its inhabitants, or has it become too technical and rigid? Please explain.

Modern house design can absolutely be emotional especially when it reflects the personal context of the occupants. Beyond just architecture, emotional connection can come from integrating the owner’s personal collections, family photos, and meaningful objects that carry their history and memories.

When a home is designed around these elements, it becomes more than just a space it becomes a reflection of the people who live in it. The key is to balance innovation with authenticity, avoiding overly technical designs that lack warmth or personal meaning.

What role does AI play in transforming housing design paradigms in 2025? Is AI merely a technical tool, or has it begun to influence creative and aesthetic decisions in the design process?

AI technology has improved tremendously in the past two years it plays a role in creative exploration of ideas and opens opportunities to see design from new perspectives. Through generative design, AI can propose countless design options based on userdefined parameters, even offering creative solutions beyond human imagination. However, at the moment, we still need designers to make creative judgments and work out the functional details. For that reason, human intuition, emotion, and cultural sensitivity remain important.

What ethical and professional challenges do architects face as AI begins to take on or threaten roles traditionally held in the design process?

As AI increasingly assists in the design process, one of the biggest challenges is maintaining originality and authorship. Since AI generates ideas based on data and references from the internet, there’s a risk of unintentionally replicating existing designs, raising concerns about copyright and ownership.

This makes the architect’s role even more crucial to ensure that the core concept remains original, meaningful, and ethically sound. In the face of these challenges, preserving authenticity will help a designer’s work stand out and remain relevant over time.
